A grab-bag of things I frequently forget the name of
Clarion–Clipperton (fracture) zone
An area of the deep Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Mexico.
It is administered by the
International Seabed Authority (ISA) under the
United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).
It has been under attack from mining companies who want to strip the
polymetallic nodules
for their layers of highly-profitable manganese.
Jaccard index / Jaccard similarity
A number (ratio) from 0 to 1 describing how similar two
sets are, with 1 implying the sets are identical (every element in one
is found in the other), and 0 implying no overlap (not a single item
from one set is found in the other set).
Merkle tree
A tree where every node holds data + a hash of all of its children.
Moiré pattern
The visual pattern formed by two overlapping, repeating patterns.
Often seen when viewing a fine repeating pattern (like a drawing, or
fabric) on a device screen.
Pannier
The bicycle bags I always want to call "saddlebags", but are not.
They hang off the sides of the bicycle. The same term is used for
the equivalent bags on the sides of e.g. a horse.
